Amazon Adventures: Clearing Up the “Battery” Confusion on Our Glowsters
If you’ve been following our journey, you know we recently expanded the Glowsters line on Amazon—those softly glowing, photoluminescent furniture (and drink) coasters designed to mark legs, corners, and other low obstacles so you (or someone you care about) don’t stub a toe in the dark.
A few days ago Amazon reached out with a concern: they wondered whether the product contains batteries.
It does not.
How Glowsters Actually Work
Glowsters are made with photoluminescent material. Here’s the simple science:
The material contains special pigments that absorb energy from ambient light (daylight, room lights, even a phone flashlight).
When the lights go out, those pigments slowly release the stored energy as a soft green glow.
No batteries. No wires. No charging ports. No power source of any kind.
The glow fades gradually over time, which is why our product listing uses the everyday word “recharge.” We mean exactly what the material requires: expose the coasters to light again so they can absorb more energy and glow once more. It’s the same language used across the photoluminescent industry (think exit signs, safety markers, and glow-in-the-dark toys).
We suspect the word “recharge” is what triggered the review. In the world of electronics, “recharge” almost always implies a battery. In the world of photoluminescence, it simply means “expose to light.” Two different meanings of the same ordinary English word.
Why This Matters
We deliberately designed Glowsters to be completely passive and maintenance-free. They’re meant for night-time safety—especially for older adults, people moving through a dark house, or parents checking on kids—without adding another device that needs charging, battery changes, or disposal concerns.
No batteries means:
Nothing to replace
Nothing to leak
Nothing that can fail when the power is out
A product that keeps working as long as there’s light during the day
We’re working with Amazon to clarify the language and make sure the listing is crystal clear. In the meantime, we wanted to share the details directly with you.
If you already have a set of Glowsters, just leave them near a window or under a lamp during the day. That’s all the “recharging” they need. When the lights go out, they’ll be ready to help light the way—quietly, safely, and without a single battery in sight.
